GLOBAL MIL WEEK 2021

Global Media and Information Literacy Week was initiated by UNESCO in 2012. It is celebrated every year from 24 to 31 October with the aim of meeting the growing demand for MRE worldwide. It underlines the need to recognise our common interest in improving everyone's ability to interact critically with information, media and technology, as they engage in social development. In Cameroon, the Cameroon Media Education Association (EDUK-MEDIA) organised the first ever celebration of this event for the very first time in 2019 with the support of the UNESCO Central Africa Regional Office. It was a conference with a of more than 200 participants in the premises of the École Supérieure des Sciences et Techniques de l'Information et de la communication (ESSTIC).
The 2020 edition was marked by the participation of several international experts during a webinar as well as workshops to train young people in techniques to fight against hate speech and disinformation.
This year's event will mobilize public authorities, academics, community leaders and young people through several activities to the importance of media literacy.
ACTIVITIES
Two mains activities will be on the program from 24 to 31 october 2021
1- Training and awarness-raising workshop
The first activity will consist of a series of awareness-raising and training workshops for young people on digital human rights issues, disinformation, hate speech, privacy, cybersecurity and digital data protection. The workshops will involve a large number of young people and will take place face-to-face and online in several regions of the country.
2-International colloquium
The colloquim which will be held over 2 days, will aim to interest public authorities as well as academics to the issue of media literacy. The experience of several foreign experts and academics will enrich the internal contributions. The call for papers will be launched for African academics and the papers from the symposium will be published.
OBJECTIVES
The overall objective of the SEMI 2021 celebration is to present the IME as a serious alternative to fight against media abuse and social networks.
Specifically, the aim is to
· Equip young people with cyber security, protection of privacy and personal data, the fight against disinformation and hate speech (workshops)
· Initiate research and research collaborations in IME among academics in various disciplines (international symposium)
· Raise awareness among public authorities on the importance of institutionalising MIL
